11% of Bruneians are diabetics according to the published statistics from 2011 by the Ministry of Health, and diabetes is the 3rd leading cause of death in Brunei after cancer and heart disease. Out of the total number of diabetics in the country, 90% are having Type 2 diabetes.
The numbers of patients are increasing every year. In 2014 some estimates claim that up to 25% of the population are either diabetic or in the pre-diabetes stage. It is also reported that 57% of kidney failure cases were caused by diabetes and 30% of heart attacks were also from diabetic patients. In 2008, 44 cases of leg amputations were recorded.
